You Scream, I Scream, We All Scream..... Gelato Affogato!!
There are few things in life that are as satisfying in hot weather as frozen treats. Things like Sherbet, Sorbet, Ice Cream, Popsicles, Fudgesicles, Creamsicles and my personal favorite; Gelato. And in all honesty, my favorite way to eat Gelato is to simply pour espresso over it and consume with reckless abandon. Thus Gelato Affogato is my frozen treat of choice. At once so simple, yet seductively delicious. Like a miniature root beer float without the cloying sweetness and spiked with caffeine. LOL
And of course, for someone like me who has a soft spot for all things of the coffee persuasion, it fits me to a "T". You can mix it up if you like, and change your Gelato flavor, but I like the simple classic combination of Vanilla Bean Gelato and espresso.
Per serving you will need.....
1 Very cold glass dish
1 scoop of Vanilla Bean Gelato (about 3-4 oz)
1 Shot of Espresso
1 Spoon (I have a silver plated spoon I picked up for $1, that I use for this special dessert)
Optional - A touch of Unsweetened Whipped Heavy Cream
Place your dish in the freezer for 5 minutes.
Place the scoop of Gelato in the chilled glass.
Return to the freezer for 15 minutes.
5 minutes before the Gelato is hardened, pull a shot of espresso. (I love my espresso machine, just look at that crema!)
Let it cool while you wait until the full 15 minutes is up. (this will probably only be a couple minutes after pullin the shot)
If you will be serving with whipped cream, go ahead and whip up some heavy cream while you wait. (I have whipped cream left in my Si Whip from the BBQ last night)
Remove the Gelato from the freezer and anoint it with the warm espresso.
Top with the whipped cream.
And dig in with your spoon.
Heaven in a bowl! I am telling ya, this stuff, though a little messy lookin' is sinfully delicious.
Sweet Vanilla & Robust Coffee in perfect balance. The textures are amazing, the Gelato stays creamy smooth in the center, while the "event horizon", where Gelato meets espresso, forms this icy crust.... Decadent Deliciousness!
