You had me right up until I read fennel seeds. Mind you I am a big fan of them but not so sure about in a cake.
I was a little worried myself when I made it. In all honesty though, I didn't even notice they were in the cake... I think the Cinnamon & Cardamom overshadow it so much that all it does is add a little bit of sweetness to the cocoa powder. It was REALLY good and REALLY fast to throw together too. Which is always a plus.
